Most Mac music aficionados use iTunes as their music library, media player, and CD-burning engine. We then burned the same content to a dual-layer DVD, which required no recompression to fit but didn't play on one of our two consumer players. We produced a 2-hour single-layer DVD from an image created by iDVD and found video quality surprisingly good. You can use this same function to fit any dual-layer image stored on your hard drive onto a single-layer disk, which is one of the major functions of Toast's sister product Roxio Popcorn ($49.95 direct). Click the 'Fit to DVD video compression' option, and Toast will re-encode the video as required to fit onto a single DVD. You build your project as normal in iMovie and iDVD, specifying that you're burning to a double-layer disc in the Project Info window, then produce a disc image which you import into Toast. You can also use Toast to overcome iDVD's 90-minute limit on single-layer DVDs. You'll quickly learn to keep your menu and button titles short otherwise Toast will unexpectedly truncate them. One major frustration in Toast is the complete lack of DVD-preview capabilities, which means you can't check menu operation or title and button labels before burning. You can choose one of ten menu templates for the disc they are generally attractive, but not editable.

Toast imported all three separately, and we deleted the credits movie to save space. For example, one of our test DVDs contained a ballet performance, with three movies: one for each act and one for the credits. Toast imports each movie on all source DVDs separately and presents each one as a separate button on a sequential menu.Īfter importing, you can preview each movie to identify its contents, decide if you want to include it in the compilation, and if so, label it accordingly. Toast can also consolidate the content of several DVDs to a single DVD, automatically recompressing content as necessary to fit the target media, a useful way to merge several shorter iDVD projects into one compilation. First is a simple disc-to-disc copy function, which preserves all menus and other content, though you can elect to copy only the main movie to save space. Toast offers two DVD-copying options, which both work only with discs or disc images that are not copy-protected. You can back up to any hard drive on your system, or to a remote server or DVD, with Toast handling spanning if required.

Roxio also bundles Déjà Vu, which installs as the system preference and lets you perform manual or scheduled backups of selected folders, create a bootable clone of your system disk, and mirror the contents of folders. The file played perfectly, indicating an accurate bit-for-bit restoration. We spanned a 1.2GB video file over two CD-R discs, and then restored the file on a different computer.

Unlike Mac OS X backups, Toast backups can span multiple discs, and the restore software that's automatically added to each burned disc lets you restore the data on any Macintosh (but not Windows) computer. Specifically, backing up 4.17GB of files to a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-109 on our Dual 2.6 GHz PowerPC G5 took 8 minutes 35 seconds with Toast and 8:40 using OS X's internal disc-burning facility. Don't expect Toast to speed your backups significantly, however, as we saw little performance difference on our tests. When it comes to backing up data, Toast's disc-burning capabilities are more intuitive than those of Mac OS X-especially if you're used to working with a dedicated program or wizard for selecting files and burning options, as most Windows programs offer, rather than using an extension of Mac OS's Finder.
